The other day in Trader Joe's I purchased two large cans of dark roasted beans. A helpful 20-something employee asked me, "Sir, do you have a machine to grind these at home?" (Translation: "Old man, you do realize you're buying beans, not NesCafe, right?") I held my tongue. "Yeah. I do." Coffee is kind of my thing. Anyone who's had my homemade Soy Latte can attest to my skills. I absolutely need a cup of personality in the morning or I'll never get Mr. Grumpy out of my head. On the road I am a loyal Starbucks patron, with Eric and Gordon close behind. Glen Burtnik calls Starbucks "Fivebucks", which is a fair snark, but I will never, ever be mad at a place for making great coffee. Recently in Austria I asked the desk person if her city (Linz) had a Starbucks. Her shoulders slumped with frustration and she said, "I'm embarrassed to say that we don't. I wish we did!" I felt her pain.
